PRAXIS3 is excited to share news of our recent AIA Design Awards and to also introduce you to some of the new faces in the office.

AIA Georgia Design Awards

We are thrilled to announce that LP3 Architecture, a collaboration between Praxis3 & Amy Landesberg Architects, is the recipient of two AIA Georgia Design Awards. The Decatur Recreation Center received one of only two Honor Awards given – the highest achievement possible, and The University of Georgia College of Environment & Design received a Merit Award. Both projects involved the restoration and reconfiguration of significant mid-century modern buildings. We can think of nothing more sustainable in the world of design and construction than to significantly extend the life of an existing building. Especially two buildings that mean so much to the respective communities in which they reside. The Decatur Recreation Center is LEED Silver and the UGA College of Environment & Design is LEED Gold.

Honor Award
The Decatur Recreation Center

The Decatur Recreation Center was originally constructed in 1958 and houses a diverse group of recreational, civic and arts programs for the City of Decatur. Working closely with City officials, we re-programmed the facility and developed plans to renovate and re-purpose the building to accommodate the functional requirements of a 21st century recreation and community center. There was a strong desire to preserve the mid-20th century architecture of “The Rec”, a sound and enduring building that carries many positive memories for Decatur residents. The exterior of the building was preserved largely intact. A terrace on the west side of the structure was inactive and was replaced with a new addition designed to be compatible with the original building. A new mirror designed for dance and movement classes was patterned to reflect the original 1958 brickwork that was a part of the original terrace screen wall. The existing wood boards from the gymnasium bleachers were repurposed as paneling for the walls and ceilings of the primary public spaces in the building.

Merit Award
The University of Georgia – College of Environment & Design

This renovation of Joe Amisano’s Visual Arts Building might paradoxically be measured by what is no longer seen: decades of accumulated distractions were surgically subtracted from the mid-century masterpiece while state-of-the-art systems were delicately added. We carefully converted the former Visual Arts Building into The University of Georgia’s new home for the College of Environment & Design (CED). The CED is one of the largest and most important Colleges of its kind with degrees in Landscape Architecture, Historic Preservation, and Environmental Planning & Design. Originally distributed among five buildings, the College lacked a clear identity on campus. The goal of this project was to create a permanent home that reflected the mission of the CED and its stature as a national leader in its fields. The renovation included the restoration of the façade, replacement of all glazing and roofing assemblies; as well as a complete renovation of the interior. This LEED Gold project utilizes a chilled-beam mechanical system which was carefully added to insure that it conformed to the lines of the existing space. The CED contains open studios and high-tech classrooms, an expanded library, a highly visible new gallery, and expanded administrative facilities.

Tang Fang

Tang Fang is a registered architect and joins Praxis3 to give the fellow Cornell grad, Stuart, some company, and to dive herself back into the world of automotive dealership design. She brings 13 years of design experience ranging from complex pharmaceutical labs, automotive retail, to a 1300 square foot condo renovation. Despite her non-towering stature of 5’-0”, she can easily be found playing sand volleyball in her free time.

Scott Hardin

Scott Hardin joins Praxis3 as an intern architect with 3 years of architecture experience in the area of public education. He is a graduate of Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta, GA. Scott believes in creative architectural solutions in which building performance wins out over the argument between form and function. When not in the office Scott enjoys traveling, playing golf, chess, and tasting interesting craft beers.

Yunxin Hu

Yunxin Hu (Vee) was born and raised in Nanjing, China, and came to the United States four years ago to attend the College of Architecture at Georgia Tech. She received Bachelor’s degree of Science in Architecture and Certificate in City Planning. In college, she was actively involved in architectural design competitions and learned a lot from the process of collaborating, not competing. Professionally, she has done institutional renovation projects in Korea, and a lot of 3d-modeling and rendering work for Georgia Tech’s civil engineering department. Yunxin believes that good designs are for people and experiences. She has strong interests in developing symbiotic relationships between architecture and ecology, architecture and people; and is hoping for an opportunity to work for her home country.

Drew Ewing

Drew Ewing joins Praxis3 as an intern architect. He is a 2011 graduate from the University of Tennessee College of Architecture and Design where he received his Bachelor of Architecture. Drew began his career as a commercial kitchen designer for TriMark Strategic in Knoxville, Tennessee where he worked primarily on Chick-fil-A restaurants and philanthropic ventures. Prior to this, Drew displayed his graphic design talents through freelance work with the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeder’s and Exhibitors Association magazine “The Voice” where he created page layouts, logos and advertisements. During this time he also worked as an assistant in the writing lab at Lewisburg Middle School in Lewisburg, Tennessee where he strived to instill the understanding of the importance of writing as concerned with their future in today’s youth.
